He had a way with words.
“You be good, see you tomorrow. I love you.”
When I first learned of Alex, I immediately denied the concept. A bird, a parrot, capable of complex communication? Still, as the different articles and reports accumulated, I had to believe that it was in fact true. An African Grey Parrot named Alex, did in fact, have the power of speech.
He was 31. His species can live to be twice that age in captivity.
Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. Actually, I think Alex's last words were "You'll be here tomorrow." It was one of the scientists who last said to him, "You be good. I'll see you tomorrow. I love you."
Which personally, I find all the more creepy. "You'll be here tomorrow." First of all, its an actual response, not just a trained response, and second, it was almost as though he knew he was going to die. As if to say "You'll be here tomorrow, but I wont."
