Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

Laika the space dog

Actually, the Soviets lied, and she died from overheating in the space capsule a few hours afer launch. The myth is that they fed her poisoned dog food, which was revealed to be a lie in 2002.

Wikipedia: the source for information and disappointment. No, I do not enjoy poisoning dogs, but it is still crappy that Laika died painfully instead of from a bad dog biscuit...

Any ways, I attended my first Red Wings game last night. The Dallas Stars really were not the competitors the Wings deserved. The final score was 6 to 1, Red Wings. Still, I had a good time, and drank expensive beer. The ride to and from the Arena was... interesting to say the least. Oh, and don't get slushees at Joe Louis arena.

All right... I guess that's it.

don't forget that wikipedia is only a jumping off point. i saw an interview on the daily show with an actor (sorry i forget who) that said that his friends used to go on and each day add some new piece of bullshit. i myself have added to wikipedia (see hyde park, boston - the parts about the 54th regiment; angelina grimke and westinghouse)and i'm not an expert in anything.

i couldn't find anything about the poisoned dog food. i did find one rumour of a gas released to euthanize after a few days. not that i'm doubting you just that what i found the soviets lied by saying that she lived for several days. they weren't lying because they were trying to appear humane - they were lying in an effort to make it seem that they were more successful than they were. (imho)

as to whether it is humane or not - i agree it's very sad but it's part of what made space travel possible. i guess it's a personal thing whether you think the trade off was fair or not.

if the ride was interesting - shouldn't you tell us about it?? oh, and what do you mean you drank expensive beer? isn't kim still pregnant :D

Don't get slushees? Why no slushees? Was there something in the slushees I should know about? Don't tell me they cost as much as a beer!
