Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

Michael Phelps

He is from Baltimore, but he put down roots in Ann Arbor. Have you seen this man swim? He's like a shark with big ears.

So, as mentioned by Garvin, it was a little dry for the last few weeks. Luckily there has been some rain, and Kim's lawn will require a bit of a trim. Chud... do grow up. Any ways, I have been watching the Olympics with Kim these past few days, and I wanted to find out from the ladies (mostly... the guys can chime in, but I am pretty sure I know the consensus on that front already) that read my blog about an issue that Kim brought up.

That is Kerri Walsh, American Olympic Gold Medalist Beach Volley Ball player.

That is Misty May, Kerri Walsh's partner, and also an Olympic Gold Medalist. **EDIT: This photo may not be Misty May. Here is a different photo, just in case.**

Kim seems to feel that their attire is... less than dignified for Olympians. I myself, being more neutral on the issue of clothing, am not really moved one way or the other as far as their clothing is concerned.

Any ways, we talked about it in private, and because I need content, I am making it public. Please discuss.

I think as long as we've got equal opportunity of exploitation of hot olympic bods across the sexes, it's ok with me. Although I'm not sure Michael Phelps in a thong would have the same effect.

according to carl - who has read well, nearly everything, (kim, back me up on this) - anyway, he says the women's beach volleyball 'likes' these outfits (note: the regular volleyball team wears shorts and shirts). idk - i felt the same way as kim but then they do have some say in it - the only 'requirements' are that they wear a top and bottom - they could have opted for any number of things. the us team did pick out their own outfits. (interestingly, those requirements caused india's team to withdraw from the olympics) maybe this is how they garnered the attention necessary to have interest in their sport. and justifiably so - i mean, women's sports are not viewed as much by half.

the exploitation? a bit yicky i agree but if an adult is complicit in it then . . . i mean, seen the mcdonald's commercials?? the connection being that athletes have to find a way to support themselves. i mean, do you REALLY think these world class athletes are eating partially hydrogenated vegetable oil for breakfast??? or . .. ever?

so far my favorite moment has been the french relay team just yap yapp yappity yapping about all the ass they were going to kick and our boys wiping up with them. i hate the french and i love swimming. it was a nice moment for me.

OK so I think the first outfit, the outfit that Kerri Walsh was wearing to compete, was fine. They probably want to wear something that will not constrict any movements. At least it wasn't fluorescent, or have ruffles on it, or cherries, or anything else equally embarrassing to our nation. I agree the shorts could have been a little bigger, so we don't see gratuitous ass cheek.
But the advertisement I feel was in poor taste. The company should have allowed the Olympian athlete to do something a little more tasteful, and she should have asked to do something with a little more class. She is, after all, representing the USA, and they already have PLENTY of reasons. Let's not give the rest of the world more reasons.
They are, however, probably paying her mortgage for the next several months... and if it were me I would probably bite my finger like a little schoolgirl for that too. But if I was an Olympian, maybe I would ask to wear a shirt for it, or at least a fake gold medal to cover my cleavage. :)

Oops, I meant to say the have plenty of reasons already to hate us.

The Maxim cover is great. Pose for playboy, I'll look and men will jerk off. I just think that this is The Olympics and I have some sort of respect thing going on that makes me think the tiny bikinis that the volley ball girls are wearing are in bad taste. Exploit your body in a magazine to make $$, I would too if I could. I just don't want to think about whether your ass is going to fall out of your bathing suit when I'm cheering you on to beat the French at volley ball.

ok, they play volleyball. in sand. here's a test for kim: go put any manner of clothing on and roll around in sand. then, get sweaty, and do the same. then, try to perform physical feats at an olympic level. you will find that the least amount of clothing is the best. women's indoor volleyball wears shorts and tanks, cuz they don't have SAND. seriously, the women AND men, prefer to have the sand on their arms and hands as it helps with ball control, and the skimpy outfits actually are form meats function in that they abate chaffing.

that being said i was first drawn to women's beach volleyball on the fact that gabrielle reese was an amazing vixen in a bikini. but, then i was ten. may/walsh... yowza. but demeaning to themselves? if you had that body, you'd be wanting to show it off too. i know i would.

@joe c actually, last olympics she wasn't married, and when posed for maxim i don't believe she was either. the media pretty much drops her name cuz everyone knows may/walsh.

also, mens gymnasts wear stirrup pants. STIRRUP PANTS! talk about degrading and bad taste.

drunken chud ~ it's a good theory about the men's beach volleyball but http://www.usatoday.com/sports/olympics/beijing/volleyball/2008-08-11-mensbeachvolley_N.htm

shorts and sleeveless shirts

course as i said they do have some say the real bitch of those outfits is that they refused to let people (india) wear more.

as for gymnastics well - there is equal opportunity degradation in that sport but not so much sexual objectification since, as you so rightly point out, those are NOT flattering outfits. course gymnastics has the whole stunting of normal development in children thing going for it which is an actual exploitation.

course all that said i personally dug watching hot bodied chicks try to kill each other with a volleyball.

cassdawn, actually in men's pro beach volleyball they usually play shirtless, for the same reasons i mentioned. i guess the olympics has shunned man nipples.

i'm just picturing the indian women in the get up the swimmers wear with full legs and a tank top playing volleyball, and then i started to chuckle thinking of the Saudi women's beach volleyball team playing in full burka's. hahahahahaha. oh shit. i slay me.

Hey, in my opinion beach volleyball is an unnecessary sport for the olympics. We already had volleyball. We didn't need to add a weekend hobby to the olympics at all.

cassdawn said...

cindy-lou,

i'd go the other way on that. do anything in soft sand is far more impressive. so get rid of regular volley ball.
