Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

Evil Zakkie

He is the administrator of Spectrumites.

I enjoy debating. I don't enjoy being called an asshole, or being called a closet racist. Now, I bring such accusations upon myself, more often than not, though. Any way, I like Spectrumites. I want to be a positive and thoughtful contributor to ideas and concepts there.

I will try to diminish the abrasive nature of my writing style as time goes on. I will work to prevent ongoing conflicts.

And I will also call things as I see them. How I will reconcile these two sometimes opposing goals, honesty and tact... is something to be worked out as I go along.

it makes it easier if you keep reminding yourself that nothing wins an argument like a cool head.

it doesn't mean that people won't still call you names. just because your style is sometimes abrasive doesn't mean other folks aren't assholes.

i spent 3 years on a debate forum feminism v. antifeminism. my claim to fame or at least what i am most proud of is that at the end of it no one was ever sure whether i was male or female or for that matter whether i was pro or anti feminism.

now i tell you that (well, sure a little because i like that story BUT) because what i found was that when people didn't agree with you they regaled you to the category they were against and called you names. try to find someone you respect in the group and use them as your barometer. or use people that you know care about you.

for instance, in our 'debates' if i didn't care about you or know you at all i would have taken the things you said in a VERY different light. i also would have been very cutting; not resorting to calling you an asshole but the only reason i wouldn't have is because i believe in the kill em with kindness road.

one last thought - try to imagine yourself on the other side of the debate. try to picture that you believe what your "opponent" believes. just for a second. it will give you a chance to come up with reasons for what otherwise might seem and untenable position. it will help in the respect department.

. . . . for whatever that's worth

EZ is a pretty smart guy. I am not comfortable there right now and do not feel welcome. Either that will change as time goes on, or I will lose interest.

I think you're very insightful and intelligent, scoot.

You're opinionated, but I respect that.

I just don't think I'd ask you if my butt looked big in these pants.

I'm Scooter, but I might be a troll. said...
