Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

Paul Bunyan

He is a mythological figure from an era that did not think about things like deforestation, landslides of bare hills, and waiting 150 years for the trees to mature again.

There was a dead tree in my families front yard. It was over 100 feet tall, and all of its bark had fallen off. It had most likely been dead for at least three years. The base of it was rotting away. My step-father, concerned for the safety of the house and for our neighbor's chain-link fence that was adjacent to it, decided that this morning would be the day we cut it down.

We really should have hired a tree service. I don't really want to get in to specifics, but it is a wonder that my 17 year old half-brother is still alive.

Run to the side of a falling tree, not away from it.

This is why prior to making any cuts, you take rope/heavy twine and tie it to the top area of the tree, and pull it taut.

Then you make the necessary incisions. This allows yo uto get the distance you need to be safely away, and direct the tree in it's soon to be rapid decent, away from people and fences.

Structures too, if you are so inclined.
